What's the Effect of Marrying Someone on Medicaid?

by Jacob

Question:

I and my girlfriend just got married. She collects SSD and gets Medicaid and Medicare. We know it won't effect her ssd, but will it effect her Medicare and medicaid.

Answer:

Jacob, I'm not certain your situation. Is your new bride in a nursing home?

If so, and she's receiving Medicaid, then your assets will be part of the required spend down. So, it's probably not good news. But, again, I'm not sure your factual situation. The potential pitfalls of marrying someone who may shortly go on medicaid are discussed more fully at Elderly Marriage Issues.
